Bryant Park as Ice Skating Rink?

Back in April a few neighbors wondered if Bryant Park could be turned into a winter wonderland. They asked if anyone knew if at some time in the park's history, whether it was purposefully flooded to allow ice skating.

What a great idea! Wouldn't it be something to walk down Ithaca Road to see our kids skating around on our very own pond?

What are your thoughts about this idea? Does anyone know if this has been done before? Please either respond here in the comments section or on our listserv with your thoughts, ideas, or questions. If there is enough interest, perhaps a group of folks could work together to determine the feasibility of a new recreational area with easy access to us all!

  1. I can take this to the January meeting of the City Parks Commission, but sadly I think the answer will be no. The city has very little money for things like this (or anything else), and even if someone else paid to flood the park there are issues of staffing, liability, maintenance, and restoring the park in the spring. By the way to my knowledge Bryant Park has never been used this way, but some private properties in Belle Sherman have had small rinks.
